The Sci:dentity project was a 12-month, Wellcome Trust-funded arts project, working initially with a group of 18 young trans people from all around the UK, engaging with the science of sex and gender. It ran in 2006.

Here's a 2minute trailer for the 2010 cut of the documentary, to give you a flavour of the project, and to whet your appetite for the full 24min film.

A series of arts workshops facilitated the group's preferred modes of expression, which we identified during our first weekend. Three working groups emerged: film, live performance & art. Throughout this phase of the project, footage was collected for a documentary film. One key function of this film was that it re-presented the experiences of the group as they explored the ways that the science of sex & gender impacted (or doesn't) on their lives as young transgendered individuals.

The original documentary film incorporated images created by the participants (film pieces & photographs), interviews that they carried out with medical professionals and older members of the trans community, as well as footage recorded as part of the documentation of the workshops. The workshops culminated in an exhibition in June 2006 where the documentary was screened. A series of outreach activities was then scheduled to commence in September 2006, running until February 2007, where the film was shown and discussions around the science and bio-ethics of sex and gender engaged a wider audience of trans and non-trans young people.
